Isla en la bahía de Nueva York y municipio (pob., 2000: 443.728 hab.) de la ciudad de Nueva York en Nueva York, EE.UU. Tiene casi 155 km2 (60 mi2) de superficie y se conecta con Brooklyn a través del puente Verrazano-Narrows y con Nueva Jersey por varios puentes; es accesible desde Manhattan por medio del transbordador de Staten Island.

Los holandeses trataron de colonizar la isla en 1630 pero los indios delaware que la habitaban frustaron sus intentos hasta 1661, año en que la Compañía Holandesa de las Indias Occidentales cedió la isla a los franceses y se establecieron asentamientos. Después de que Gran Bretaña adquirió Nueva Holanda en 1664, agricultores ingleses y galeses establecieron sus viviendas y predios en la isla. En 1898 se convirtió en un municipio de la ciudad de Nueva York con el nombre de Richmond; la denominación Staten Island se oficializó en 1975. La isla, principalmente residencial, cuenta con algunas industrias, entre ellas astilleros, imprentas y refinerías y tanques de almacenamiento de petróleo. Es sede del Wagner College (1883; trasladado desde Rochester en 1918).
